HANCOCK

Little Walkers Creek

Hancock Family

English origin, a patronymic (of, relating to, or derived from the name of one's father or a paternal ancestor) derived from Hann 1) a nickname for John 'gracious gift of Yahveh' or just ' gift of God or Jehovah,' from the medial syllable of the full form, Johannes; in its various national forms John has been excedingly frequent throughout Europe due to the outstanding Biblical characters John the Baptist and John the apostle, beloved disciple of Jesus, numerous popes and saints of that name; 2) if Ralf, like other Norman names beginning with R, had rhymed forms with H (such as Hick for Richard), perhaps Hancock, can be derived from Ralf used in England before the Norman Conquest, in the form Raedwulf “shield wolf,” which became Radulf and then Ralf; 3) Hann can also be a short form for Henry “home rule”, introduced by Normans, which became popular due to the three strong kings of this name during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. In any case the name contains the common English diminutives -cock.[1]
