German, a similar form of the English Bruns, Bronson, Brown, and Brownel; all derived from the Anglo-Saxon name and name element Brun “brown”.[1]

 

Jacob Brunk was born about 1734 in Germany, migrated to America by 1759 when he married Anna Maria Stouffer in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. Jacob died in 1787 in Washington County, Maryland They had a son John born about 1760 in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.

 

John married Mary Magdalene [maiden name unknown]. John died before 1811 in Botetourt County, Virginia. They had a son, Jacob born about 1785 in Virginia.

 

Jacob married Nancy Ann Shank on 10 October 1806 in Montgomery County. They had son Jacob born about 1818 in Montgomery County; married Elizabeth W. Keffer on 07 June 1841 in Montgomery. Elizabeth’s parents were George Washington Keffer and Hannah Ruth Caldwell. They had children George Washington., Nancy Ann, Christopher, Hannah M., William Steven, Sara Lavina, John Griffith and Mary Louisa.[2]

 

William Steven Brunk was born 03 October 1848 in Montgomery County and died 21 August 1922 in Bland County. He is buried in the Goshen Methodist Church Cemetery, Spur Branch, Little Walker’s Creek, Bland County. He married 1st Eliza Allen on 17 February 1876 in Montgomery County. Eliza died 02 February 1889 in Cox’s Hollow, Pulaski County.[3] William remarried to Nancy Catherine Banes on 09 May 1889 in Pulaski County. She was the daughter of Jeremiah Banes and Sarah Davis. Nancy “Nannie” was born 21 June 1858 and died 24 June 1909 and is buried in the Goshen Cemetery.

 

William S. bought 124 acres on Spur Branch from Joseph E. Stafford on May 25, 1887. Joseph had died and had not conveyed the land to William. On May 20, 1890, James B. Peck Commissioner of the Circuit Court of Giles County conveyed this land to William S. Brunk pending a lawsuit between Brunk and Stafford’s heirs. Stafford’s heirs were claiming Brunk had not paid for the land. It was shown to the satisfaction of the court that Brunk had paid the entire $450.00 amount. A decree was entered into court on May 8, 1890.[4]

 

William and his wife Nancy C. conveyed 50 acres to David S. Ritter on October 7, 1893.[5]

 

William was living in Montgomery County in 1880 per the 1880 Montgomery County census. It is unknown where he lived in 1890 as most of the 1890 U. S. Census was destroyed by fire.

 

William Stephen Brunk and Eliza Allen’s children:

1.       Elizabeth “Lizzie” Cora was born 11 January 1877 in Montgomery County and died 21 April 1950. “Lizzie” is buried in the Goshen Church Cemetery on Spur Branch. She never married.

2.       Eugene Edward was born December 1878 in Montgomery County. He married Allie Ann Ritter, daughter of David Spencer Ritter and Hettie Locritta Shufflebarger. Allie was born February 18, 1884 in Pulaski County. Eugene died in 1918 of influenza6. Allie was living in Augusta County, Virginia in 1920. Allie later married Robert Peery and moved to Richmond, Virginia. Children from the 1920 Augusta County census:

3.       John William born 13 February 1882 and died 04 May 1882 in Montgomery County.[6]

4.        George Thomas born 30 August 1883 and died 29 June 1956 in Pulaski County. George married Ellen Lee Carden on 19 January 1904 in Pulaski County. Ellen was born 30 June 1885 in Pulaski County and died 08 November 1955 in Pulaski County. She was the daughter of Charles W. Carden and Cynthia Victoria Tickle. They are buried in the Church Of Jesus Cemetery-Highland Road, Pulaski County. George and Ellen lived in the area of Belspring, Pulaski County. Children from the 1920 Pulaski census:

5.       Walter Herbert born March 29, 1886 and died February 27, 1962 in Bland County. He married Nancy Catherine Banes on August 22, 1902 in Pulaski County. *See Banes Family

 

On November 15, 1951, Walter Brunk, widower, sold 50 acres to Buford R. Martin. “…situated on the waters of Walker’s Little Creek…being bounded on the East by the Moses Akers Home Place, on the South by Max Grief’s land, on the West by the lines of R. L. Milliron’s land, and on the North by Max Greif’s big survey (now owned by the United States Government)…being the same property which was conveyed to the said Walter Brunk by deed from Jacob H. Davis and Julia A. Davis, his wife, of date June 9, 1913…”.[7]

 

6.        Robert Kelley born July 21, 1887 and died May 4, 1971 in Wythe County. Robert married Effie Ethel Davis on September 17, 1913 in Bland County. Effie was born July 14, 1892 in Bland County and died August 15, 1974 in Wythe County. She was the daughter of Charles William Davis and Louisa Virginia Davis. Robert and Effie are buried in the Hidden Valley #2 Cemetery on Little Walker’s Creek, Bland County. Children:

7.       Vernie Eliza born 11 January 1889 and died 02 November 1957 in Bland County. She married Richard Floyd Davis December 29, 1915 in Bland County. Richard was born 14 January 1886 to James Whitten Davis and Nancy Jane King. Richard died 25 September 1971 in Bland County. Both are buried in the Hidden Valley #2 Cemetery on Little Walker’s Creek. Children:

7.1.        Trinkle Whitten born 13 October 1916 and died 1994. He married Vivian G. Chandler daughter of John Robert Chandler and Wilma Lou Ritter.

7.2.        Floyd Clayton was born 12 October 1919 and died 18 November 1994. See Article.

MT. JULIET, Tenn. - Mrs. Dorothy Davis, 75, of Mt. Juliet, entered God's eternal kingdom on Oct. 6, 2003. She was a loving and faithful wife, mother and disciple, who served her Lord, her family, and her friends with her singing voice, her arts and crafts, her acts of kindness, and her spirit of adventure.

 

She was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Rev. Floyd C. Davis, a former pastor of First United Methodist Church, Bluefield, Va.; and a daughter, Cathy Davis Hardin.

 

The family will receive friends at Dudley Memorial Mortuary, Bluefield, Va. today from 5-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church, Bluefield, Va. followed by a graveside service at Hidden Valley Cemetery, Little Creek, Va., near Davis Chapel United Methodist Church. Services will be conducted by the Rev. Hugh Kilgore and Dr. Donald Scott.

 

7.3.        James William was born 15 March 1924; died 16 September 1978. He married 1st  Ima Cox and 2nd  Virginia Magdalene Spencer.

 

William Steven also had a stepdaughter named Laura Ellen Allen born 24 January 1869.

8.       Houston Neel born 06 February 1896 in Bland County and died August 1979 in Bland County. He married Genoa Agnes Davis September 16, 1917 in Bland County. Genoa was born January 24, 1901 in Bland County and died December 1987 in Bland County. She was the daughter of Charles William Davis and Louisa Virginia Davis. Huston was a World War I veteran. Houston and Genoa are buried in the Goshen Church Cemetery. Children:

8.1.        Robert Bruce married Irene Burton. She was the daughter of Charles Calvin Burton and Bertha Jane Brunk.

8.2.        Lavina Elizabeth married John Trenton Meadows. He was the son of Wiley Vincent Meadows and Dana Rhoena Hamblin.

8.3.        Lola Grace married Raymond Alton Hamblin. He was the son of William Hoge Hamblin and Virgie Ethel Bond.

8.4.        Marvel.

8.5.        Junior Neel married Hazel Davidson Wolfe . She was the daughter of Everett C. Wolfe and Nannie Belle Shrader.

8.6.        Vance Clayton married Naomi Katherine Davis.

8.7.        Betty Marie married Hoge Harvey Wolfe.

8.8.        Hazel Naomi married Luther Vivian Vaughn.

8.9.          Mary Catherine married Allen Lee Meadows.

8.10.       Viola Agnes married Luther Hubert Wilson.

8.11.      Opal Belle [Opal born 06 June 1940; died 15 April 1941; buried in the Goshen Cemetery].
